Well - which is better, a fancy featureful machine which never gets deployed (let alone used) or a simple outdated machine which works? Obviously the latter. So I'm abandoning my FreeBSD expirament for now and am simply going to copy the current Klaki to the new hard drive in the new machine, and reboot. That shouldn't take much more than an hour and everyone will be happy - me included.
Also, the main feature I was after in FreeBSD, the jails, can probably be emulated under Linux these days by using User Mode Linux. If this is the case (I have yet to try), then it obviously makes much more sense for me to stick with what I know and get things done instead of spending all my time trying to figure out a new system.
Don't get me wrong - FreeBSD is very interesting and I learned a lot trying to get the FreeBSD-Klaki up and running. But it also has problems and I'm by now pretty convinced that I'll be more productive and will have an easier time maintaining a Linux-based Klaki. So, uh, Go Linux! Rah Rah Rah! Now I've just got to replace this Windows machine I'm using at work... :-)
The upgrade is scheduled for next Tuesday, so if this web page doesn't answer then - then you'll know why.
