I know who I am. I go online and talk to people, I send people SMS messages, I post blog comments - knowing exactly who I am and what I stand for.
Every now and again, I forget that not everyone has the same perspective.
It also works the other way around.
I've been going through my MSN/Jabber/whatever contacts today, and there are loads of whatevers@something.com that I have no idea who are. But that's OK, as I'm pretty sure they all know exactly who they are.
If I removed you by accident, well, that's what you get for having an obscure handle and not talking to me recently. Nothing personal...
The other day someone popped up on my chat and started chatting with me as if we were best mates and I knew exactly what was going on in her life. I played along and, after a while, I figured out who she was. It just wasn't immediately obvious to me who "xkwahua82@foo.com" was in real life.
I'm pretty sure that sort of thing happens all the time.
