SMS.AC spam

2004-11-17 23:43
It seems a number of Icelandic people are currently falling for "friend-referral" spam being sent by SMS.AC (no link, because I don't link to spammers). I've personally recieved one invite so far tonight, and worse, at least one has been sent to a mailing-list which I'm moderator for.

The mailing-list invite is clear indication that these messages are spam - who would try to invite a mailing-list to a web site? I read rumours online that if you sign up, then SMS.AC will automatically go through your personal contact lists and send invitations via. e-mail without asking permission, forging your name and "signature".

Evil, bad spam!

I don't know whether SMS.AC offers a legitimate service or not, but this web-site certainly raises some interesting questions and is cause for caution. When an offer seems "too good to be true", it usually isn't.

TANSTAAFL!

Updated 2005-02-17: SMS.AC have started sending me threatening e-mail because of this diary entry. Not nice!
