On Monday I went on a date! It was fun... somewhat new territory for me though, Icelanders do not really go on dates much. I counted on my American blood to guide me and it went quite well.

On Tuesday I celebrated my birthday with a good party. It was a nice mix of family, Pirates and old friends, I had a great time and I think everyone else did as well.

Wednesday was dedicated to being hung over and cleaning house, then in the evening I showed the Barónsstígur apartment to some potential tenants - and made a short video on my phone for one who was abroad.

Today I am showing off the apartment to more people and getting back into my PageKite groove. This afternoon there is a meeting with Pirates and this evening, another casual date.

Tomorrow, PageKite work and a party with Pirates in the evening.

Lögbrot á kjörfundi

Í gær gerðist ég lögbrjótur, alveg óvart: ég birti mynd af atkvæðinu mínu á Facebook. Þetta var ekki hugsað sem uppreisn, heldur var þetta bara viðbragð við merkilegu augnabliki - ég kaus sjálfan mig! Ég hef aldrei áður og mun hugsanlega aldrei aftur geta kosið sjálfan mig. Ég vildi deila augnablikinu með fólkinu mínu.

Svo var mér bent á að þetta væri ólöglegt. Í fyrstu yppti ég bara öxlum; hvað með það? Það er fullt af asnalegum lögum til, hvaða máli skiptir ein skitin mynd af kjörseðli?

En ég faldi færsluna samt skömmu síðar, þegar ég komst næst í net. Fór á kosningavöku, fagnaði og reyndi að halda í bjartsýnina þó að RÚV sýndi Pírata með undir 5% fylgi alla nóttina.

Í morgun vaknaði ég við þær fréttir að við hefðum fengið 5,1% greiddra atkvæða og þrír Píratar væru að fara á þing, meðal annars Helgi Hrafn sem er oddviti á mínum lista. Ég er þá vara-varaþingmaður? Magnað.

Svo fór ég að hugsa um þessa mynd. Ég er það mikill efahyggjumaður og anarkisti í mér, að mér finnst ekkert endilega rangt að gera hluti sem eru bannaðir. En stundum eru hlutir bannaðir af því þeir eru rangir og eftir nokkra umhugsun áttaði ég mig á því að svo er í þessu tilfelli.

Það er mikilvægt að fólk sýni ekki öðrum atkvæðin sín, þetta er ekki einkamál hvers og eins.

Leynd atkvæðisins er ein mikilvægasta stoð lýðræðisins. Án leyndar gætu atvinnuveitendur kúgað starfsfólk sitt til að kjósa "rétt" eða foreldrar skipað börnum sínum fyrir. Án leyndarinnar er hægt að ráða úrslutum kosninga með ofbeldi eða kúgun eða mútum. Þetta skiptir öllu máli.

Ég vil því biðjast afsökunar á að hafa birt atkvæði mitt í gær. Ef ég verð sektaður fyrir það þá mun ég ekkert malda í móinn, gretti mig bara og borga.

En ég ætla samt að birta mynd af kjörseðlinum og fanga augnablikið: því ég er á honum og það er mjög merkilegt!

Parliamentary review: Alþingisrýnir

My sprint for the local Pirate Party officially ended yesterday, when we launched the "Alþingisrýnir", a tool for reviewing the votes cast by members of parliaments.

It launched yesterday on the 1st day of summer, and was very well received - over 2000 Facebook "likes" in one day and five or six articles in the mainstream Icelandic media discussing the information revealed. All positive press and attention for the Pirate Party, which will hopefully help us tomorrow on election day. Score!

Tomorrow I will go and vote for myself! I am on the ballot, which is weird and exciting. Albeit only in 3rd place, which makes it highly unlikely I will end up in parliament, but there is a slight chance I might end up being a deputy. Which would be weird but interesting.

In the evening, there will of course be a party... ;-)

Today I changed the messages sent by the pill reminder, so they advertise the Icelandic Pirate party and remind people to not just take their pills, but also to go vote.

Elections are in a week.

Vitastígur 14A

Today I signed a contract to buy the top floor apartment at Vitastígur 14A. I payed lots of money. I plan to move in on the 1st of June and will make the final payment and receive the deed on July 1st. All pretty awesome.

I plan to rent out Barónsstígur, and posted the following status on Facebook to get the word out:

Jæja, ég skrifaði undir kaupsamning í dag og er því orðinn fasteignamógúll fyrir fertugt! :-P Nú þarf eitthvað mikið að gerast til að fyriræltanir mínar, að flytja á Vitastíg í byrjun júní næstkomandi, verði ekki að veruleika. Húrra!

Þetta þýðir að ég stefni að því að leigja út risíbúðina mína á Barónsstíg 39, frá 5. júní eða þar um bil. Ef þið þekkið fólk í íbúðaleit, þá má benda þeim á að hafa samband við mig. Ég mun að vísu hafa takmarkaðan tíma til að sinna þessu fram að kosningum, en það sakar ekki að byrja að láta þetta spyrjast. Netfangið mitt er bre@klaki.net, vil helst ekki fá símtöl vegna íbúðarinnar að svo stöddu.

Fyrir þá sem ekki þekkja til, er þetta tæplega 80fm risíbúð (4. hæð, engin lyfta) með þægilegu eldhúsi, borðstofu, stofu og tveimur svefnherbergjum. Svefnherbergin eru undir súð (og teljast því varla með í fermetratölunni), en hitt ekki. Plastparket er á öllum gólfum, nema klósett og bað (sitt hvort herbergið) eru flísalögð í stíl og mikið uppgerð (nýtt klósett s.l. sumar, nýtt stórt hornbaðkar frá 2006). Þvottahús í sameign, rúmgóð geymsla í kjallaranum. Geggjað útsýni út um eldhúsgluggann, smá afgirtur garðblettur á bakvið. Einhver húsgögn geta mögulega fylgt, eftir samkomulagi, annars fara hlutir í nytjagám Sorpu.

Þetta er fullkomin staðsetning fyrir unga fjölskyldu: leikskóli fyrir utan, Sundhöllin og Austurbæjarskóli hinumegin við götuna, Bónus á Laugaveginum innan þægilegs göngufæris, fimm mínútna labb á Hlemm.

Leiga er umsemjanleg, ég á enn eftir að reikna út nákvæmlega hvað ég þarf til að áætlanir mínar gangi upp, en ég hef meiri áhuga á góðum og skilvísum langtímaleigjendum heldur en að hámarka gróða.

On the ballot

It is now official, I will be on the ballot for the next parliamentary elections in Iceland. The Icelandic Pirate party has met all the requirements and will be running in all six constituencies. I am 3rd in Reykjavik North, which realistically means there is a low to moderate chance I will end up being a "deputy" or backup for Helgi Hrafn who is number one.

I think I would like that, it would be quite interesting.

The pirates have been taking up most of my time for the last couple of weeks, meetings and road trips, lots of commenting on Facebook and lots of time in etherpad hammering out policies for the party.

Sometimes it is fun, but a lot of the time it's just work.

...

In other news, the loan I need to buy Vitastígur will probably clear on Wednesday, and I will officially buy the apartment the day after. Once the paperwork is all signed, I will officially start looking for folks to rent Barónsstígur. The current plan is to move into my new digs in the first half of June.

Loans, Rannís, Pirates, Love, Planning

Today I got a phone call - my loan application for the Vitastígur apartment was approved! The remaining financial juggling should be relatively straighforward. This is awesome.

I am at home today with a sore throat, trying to make progress on the final report to Rannís about the PageKite project. I hate writing reports. But when I get it done, I will get the final 1 million ISK of grant money (and won't have to give the other 9 back), which will of course be very nice.

Yesterday (well, after midnight two days ago) it became clear that I will be on the ballot for the Icelandic Pirate Party in the Reykjavik North constituancy. I am 3rd on the ballot, which is high enough to be worth bragging about, but low enough that there is very little risk I will actually end up in parliament.

I'm single. For a while there I was hoping not to be, but I am and it sucks. As always, the world is full of interesting ladies, but it is going to take me a little while to get my head in the right place to give them the attention they deserve. So, casual encounters it is! Maybe I should start accepting couch-surfers... :-P

I also did some PageKite planning and growth measurements. Forecasts based on the last 5 months' growth rate put me in safe paycheck land by the end of November. I like growth. And paychecks.

Vitastígur!

My offer on the apartment on Vitastígur was accepted! Now I just need to sort out the loans, wait a couple of months, and the place will be mine. All miiiine!

The last few days have been raaather drunken. I wasn't too bad last night, was in bed soon after one, but the two nights before were a bit much, a weird combination of celebrating and keeping myself distracted.
