Liability and money (Bjarni Rúnar)

Well, the service's front page does it's best to scare girls off (the page intros with a joke about me collecting phone numbers and selling to the highest bidder, which is a ploy to get them to think a bit about the privacy issues) and warn them that SMS messages aren't terribly reliable. Since I'm not providing any guarantees and do my best to warn users up front of the service's limitations, I assume (hope?) I'm not liable at all.

Regarding charging for the service... frankly I don't think people would be willing to pay much for it and I'm rather fond of my current Mr. Nice Guy Who Does Chicks Everywhere A Favour status.

Of course, with enough users even a minimal charge could add up - assuming I could charge 5kr for each reminder (TAL charges 5-6kr for most of their SMS services) the current userbase is worth about 164000kr/year. Which is almost enough to be interesting... if I didn't have to worry about the phone company's cut and taxes and so on.

Somewhere in my inbox I have an offer from TAL to sign a contract and gain access to their for-pay SMS system. Maybe I'll take a look at it again if I ever reach 500 subscribers. Until then I think I'll concentrate on my real job and just be Mr. Nice Guy. :-)

In the meantime I'm actually more interested in slowly building up my grassroots media empire. My mailing lists, RSS lists and oddball SMS services are slowly gathering a rather large number of eyeballs. Selling out now and alienating people would be silly - it's far wiser to bide my time. When I'm good and ready I'll just brainwash everyone and take over the world. Muahahahaha!
