I have been testing the thing on a slow laptop (900Mhz EeePC) and slow internet connections, aiming for "not too slow" and hoping that would mean better things for people with better connections.

It's nice to get confirmation that it's working. :-)

One limitation of the system (for now), is it is very closely tied with the KPhotoAlbum app for Linux/KDE. All the editing of captions, tagging, etc, happen in KPhotoAlbum. This works great for me, as KPhotoAlbum has a really nice interface and I use it to manage all our photos, but probably limits how useful the system will be to others in the near term.
