It's less likely, but not at all impossible: if there are or were security holes in your web browser (this is not uncommon), then malicious web-sites could take advantage of them to install trojan-horses (viruses) on your computer.

This is one of the reason it's taken me months to figure out what this MSN spam was all about; I never clicked the links because I suspected it might be dangerous to do so.

Not clicking spam/virus-originated links and keeping your computer's anti-virus programs up to date is really the only advice I can give here.
